Circuito do Estoril Fernando Pires da Silva
Description
The Estoril circuit is the main circuit of Portugal for motoring and motorcycling.
It is located near the tourist resort of Estoril in the south of the country and is the home of the Portuguese MotoGP race.
The circuit was built in 1972, on a plateau near Estoril, on the initiative of Fernanda Pires da Silva, who, together with the Brazilian architect, Ayrton Lolô Cornelsen, designed the Estoril track and gave it its name, fighting against everything and everyone to erect it, in 1972, in the land purchased by his friend Lúcio Tomé Feteira. The Autodrome was the largest circuit in Portugal until the construction of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in 2008.
The conformation of the circuit remained almost unchanged until 1996, except for the inclusion of a narrow variant in the final part of the track for safety reasons in 1994. After 1996 the track underwent some major changes.
The Estoril track is very wide but still very technical. Two turns and two parabolic corners are a guarantee of hard-fought races since the overtaking points are numerous.
